What is the problem of brake pad wear on both sides of the vehicle? How should I fix it?

May. 27, 2023

Brake pad wear is a problem that many vehicle owners encounter. Due to the inconsistent road conditions and speed of the vehicle, both sides of the brake pads bear different friction, so a certain degree of wear difference is normal, in general, as long as the difference between the thickness of the left and right side of the brake pads ≤ 3mm, are normal wear range.

It is worth mentioning that, with the continuous improvement of vehicle technology, many vehicles on the market are currently installed with systems that can intelligently distribute braking force according to the actual needs of each wheel, such as ABS anti-lock system/EBD electronic brake force distribution system/ESP electronic body stability system, which can improve braking safety and also fully avoid or alleviate the problem of brake pad bias grinding.

But once the difference between the thickness of the two sides of the brake pads becomes large, especially with the naked eye can be directly and obviously identify the thickness difference, you need to take timely maintenance measures, otherwise it is easy to lead to vehicle noise, brake shaking, and in serious cases may also lead to brake failure, affecting driving safety.
Very often, the brake pads are worn not only need to replace the brake pads, but also need to find the cause, targeted maintenance. What are the common causes of brake pad wear on both sides of the vehicle?

1. Different brake pad materials.

This situation is more often found in vehicles that have had their brake pads replaced on one side. Due to the inconsistent brand of brake pads used, it is likely that there are differences in material and performance, resulting in different loss of brake pads under the same friction.

Solution:

When replacing the brake pads, try to choose the original parts or choose the parts with the same material and performance.

It is recommended that both sides of the brake pads be replaced at the same time, not just one side, of course, if the thickness difference between the two sides ≤ 3mm, you can also replace only one side.

2. Vehicles often run curves.

This is a normal wear category, when the vehicle cornering, under the action of centrifugal force, both sides of the wheel to bear the braking force size is naturally inconsistent.

Solution:

Vehicles that often take curves need to improve the frequency of maintenance, if the difference in thickness between the two sides of the brake pads is obvious, you need to replace the brake pads in a timely manner.

In the long run, if the budget is sufficient, it is recommended that the owner choose to install an auxiliary braking system to reduce the wear rate of the brake pads and extend their service life.
3. Single-side brake pad deformation.

In this case, abnormal wear is very likely to occur.

Solution: Replace the deformed brake pads.

4、Inconsistent return of the brake distributor pump.

When the brake distributor pump returns inconsistently, there will be a situation where the owner releases the brake pedal, but the braking force cannot be released within a few seconds, although the brake pads are subjected to less friction and the owner cannot easily feel it, but this will lead to excessive wear of the brake pads on this side in the long run.

Solution:

The causes of the sub-pump return problem are generally divided into two types: guide pin stalling and piston stalling. When replacing the brake pads, you only need to lubricate them to solve the problem, and it is recommended to clean all the original grease and dirt, and then reapply the grease.

When the piston is stuck, you can use a tool to push the piston to the innermost part, and then lightly press the brake to push it out, and cycle three or five times, so that the grease will lubricate the distributor pump channel, and when it is not stuck, it means that the distributor pump has returned to normal. If the operation still does not feel too smooth, it is necessary to replace the sub-pump.
5, both sides of the brake brake time is not consistent.

The inconsistent braking time of the brakes at both ends of the same axle is also one of the causes of brake pad bias wear, which is generally caused by uneven brake clearance, brake line leakage, and inconsistent brake contact area.

Solution:

The brake line should be immediately investigated for air leaks.

Readjust the brake clearance on both sides.

6, the telescopic rod into the water or lack of lubrication.

The telescopic rod is sealed by the rubber sealing sleeve, when it is water or lack of lubrication, the rod can not be free to expand and contract, resulting in brake pads can not be immediately returned after braking, causing additional wear and bias grinding.

Solution:

Check and repair the telescopic rod, drain the water and add lubricating oil.

7. Inconsistent brake fluid pipes on both sides.

There are differences in the length and thickness of the brake fluid pipes on both sides of the vehicle, resulting in inconsistent wear of the brake pads on both sides.

Solution:

Replace the brake fluid pipe of the same length and diameter width.

8. Suspension problems cause brake pad wear.

For example, the deformation of suspension parts and the deviation of the suspension fixing position can easily affect the angle of the wheel end and the front beam value, resulting in the vehicle chassis not being on a plane, causing the brake pads to be worn.

Solution: Repair or replace the suspension
